An Old Age Home – A Safe Haven for the Destitute Less Privileged Elderly

Todays Date: December 11, 2018

An Old age care home is a safe haven for the destitute/ less privileged elderly, where the elderly persons are cared for with love and concern.

A longer lifespan has been one of the best achievements of the twentieth century. There are older people now than ever before and their number is going up, day by day. The last century was also responsible for rapid industrial development as well as urbanization. In India, these developments resulted in significant changes in our social structure. The joint family culture from the past has faded away, with it collapsed the caring net of grandparents. As, the well-being of the old people has been a low priority nowadays, therefore, they are left disillusioned, devastated and isolated.

According to an exploratory study in the past, the most common reasons of the elderly living in an old age home were: misbehavior of children (29.8 %) as well as poverty/no monetary support (29.3%). Some other factors were to serve the almighty GOD (9.1%), isolation (8.0%), adjustment problems (5.7%), nuclear family system (5.1%), not having a son (5.1%), children settled in a foreign country (2.2%), children do not want to keep the elderly because of their physical and mental illness (2.2%), life threats from children (1.7%) and better facility in senior citizen homes (1.1%).

Even though, a home with the family is the most desired, nevertheless if the children are not able to look after their parents, old age homes can provide a viable alternative.

An Old age care home is a safe haven for the destitute/ less privileged elderly, where the aged people are cared for with love and concern. These old age care homes offer accommodation, food, clothing and senior citizen health care to those old age people who have nobody to care for them and particularly to those from the economically weaker sections. The elderly are taken care of by a team of well trained and dedicated professionals.
